The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda and former Deputy Health Minister, Hon. Alexander Kwesi Acquah, has asserted that the current government is running the country on the ideas and policies of former Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to him, the present administration has introduced no fresh initiatives since assuming power but rather is relying on programmes conceived and implemented under Dr Bawumia’s leadership during the previous government.
Citing examples, Hon. Acquah pointed to the Domestic Gold Purchase programme introduced on June 18, 2022, under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and spearheaded by Dr Bawumia. He noted that the policy, together with the subsequent Gold-for-Oil initiative, changed the face of Ghana’s economy by reducing the country’s dependence on foreign buyers for gold and oil.
“If he hadn’t brought these ideas, the country’s economy would have been poor because we used to sell the gold to foreigners and also buy from them,” he stressed.
The Akim Oda MP accused the current government of merely renaming the Gold-for-Oil programme as “Goldbod” and presenting it as an original policy. He argued that if Ghanaians had maintained the NPP in power, the nation would have seen greater transformation, particularly in addressing the menace of illegal mining (galamsey).
“Can you imagine if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia were to be president? The country would have improved better than we see today,” Hon. Acquah declared.
He further credited Dr Bawumia with several innovations still sustaining Ghana’s governance system, including digitalisation, mobile money interoperability, e-gates at the Kotoka International Airport, and the Zipline drone delivery programme for medical supplies.
“These concepts from him are what are being used to run the country currently,” he emphasised, underscoring his conviction that the NPP’s flagbearer remains the architect behind Ghana’s most impactful recent reforms.
