The University of Ghana, through its Health Services Directorate, has issued a public health alert following a resurgence of suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases on campus.
In a directive dated June 23, 2025, university authorities announced the reactivation of COVID-19 response protocols, urging all students, staff, and visitors to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to preventive measures.
According to the notice, the confirmed cases were detected in and around the university community, prompting swift action to limit further spread.
The university has outlined a set of mandatory guidelines, including:
- Wearing face masks in enclosed or crowded spaces
- Frequent handwashing or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers
- Maintaining at least one metre of physical distance
- Avoiding large gatherings
- Ensuring good ventilation in offices and lecture halls
- Staying home and seeking medical attention if experiencing flu-like symptoms
To bolster containment efforts, the Health Directorate has reinstated COVID-19 screening and triage protocols at campus health facilities. Officials also pledged to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates.
“This is a time for collective responsibility,” the statement read. “Let us work together to protect ourselves and our community.”
COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus, remains a global health concern, particularly in shared spaces such as universities. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, pneumonia.
The university’s renewed caution serves as a reminder to the public that despite progress made, the risk of transmission still exists, and proactive measures are vital to safeguard lives and academic continuity.
