A 63-year-old trader, Adamu Alhassan, has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the Kwadaso Circuit Court for stealing a tricycle and loaves of bread in Kumasi.
Alhassan pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by Jephthah Appau.
Presenting the facts, Police Chief Inspector David Opoku Kwabi told the court that the complainant, Oduro Zakaria, is a bread baker and resident of Ashtown in Kumasi, while the convict resides at Ahwiaa in the Afigya Kwabere East Municipality.
In February 2024, Zakaria loaded 114 loaves of bread, valued at GH¢1,680, onto his unregistered tricycle worth GH¢35,000 for distribution to customers at the Adehyeman lorry station in Kumasi.
The tricycle developed a fault, and Alhassan, who introduced himself as a stationmaster, offered to assist by helping push it to a safer location. Together, they moved it to the Kejetia MTN roundabout, where Zakaria left the tricycle in Alhassan’s care while he went to fetch a mechanic.
However, upon returning about an hour later with the mechanic, Zakaria discovered that both the tricycle and the convict were missing. He later learnt at the lorry station that Alhassan was neither a worker nor a stationmaster, as he had claimed.
Following investigations, Alhassan was arrested and charged, leading to his conviction and custodial sentence.
