TikTok Team Meets Communications Minister to Explore Digital Collaboration and Safety Initiatives

A delegation from TikTok, led by Tokunbo Ibrahim, the Government Relations and Public Policy Lead for West Africa, has paid a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), to congratulate him on his recent appointment and explore avenues for strategic collaboration.

The high-level meeting focused on digital safety, youth empowerment, and the role of social media in national development. Ms Ibrahim outlined TikTok’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s digital transformation, sharing key updates from the platform, including the launch of a new STEM feed — a curated content stream dedicated to educational videos in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Given your leadership in advancing digital inclusion, online safety, and youth empowerment, we are looking forward to seeing how the digital economy will continue to grow under your direction,” Ms Ibrahim said.

She also reaffirmed TikTok’s global and local commitment to user safety, pledging continued cooperation with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) to combat misinformation and harmful content on the platform.

In response, Hon. Samuel Nartey George expressed appreciation for the visit and TikTok’s proactive approach. He used the opportunity to underscore the government’s commitment to child online protection, urging the platform to enforce clear age restrictions and strengthen its moderation policies to shield minors from inappropriate content.

“We must work together to ensure that digital platforms remain safe for all users—especially children. Enforcing age-appropriate content standards and discouraging harmful material must be a shared priority,” the minister said.

He challenged TikTok to shift from being seen merely as an entertainment hub to becoming a valuable platform for learning, skills development, and economic opportunity for Ghanaian youth.

The minister welcomed the newly introduced STEM feed, expressing interest in integrating it with Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme.

“We will work with you to see how to drive content around the One Million Coders initiative, helping Ghanaians to use TikTok not just to consume, but also to learn and pick up valuable skills,” Hon. Nartey George noted.

In a forward-looking proposal, the minister suggested the establishment of boot camp training programmes for bloggers and content creators. This, he said, would help them better understand the platform’s monetisation tools, community guidelines, and global standards—unlocking greater economic potential within Ghana’s digital creator economy.

He also enquired about TikTok’s algorithm structure in Ghana and how it influences content visibility and engagement.

“There is a need for more transparency in how your algorithms work, especially within our local context. We want to ensure that quality, educational, and culturally appropriate content gets the visibility it deserves,” he added.

Finally, the minister stressed the urgent need to combat misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, proposing the creation of a dedicated TikTok content consideration team for Ghana to ensure content reflects national values and public safety.

The courtesy call ended on a positive note, with both parties expressing readiness to deepen collaboration and harness the power of digital technology to drive education, innovation, and safe online participation for all Ghanaians.
