Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a blistering call for the complete removal of the top leadership of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), citing persistent failures and a loss of public confidence.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, June 25, Mr Nketia declared the EC “unfit for purpose”, insisting that the current leadership has mismanaged the Commission and undermined the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
“There has to be a change. The three top leaders must all go. They have managed the Commission so badly,” he stated emphatically.
According to the NDC Chairman, the EC has consistently failed at its core mandate — organising free, fair, and credible elections. He accused the Commission, under the leadership of Jean Mensa, of negligence and an inability to prevent electoral deadlocks, which are not envisioned under Ghana’s legal framework.
Mr. Nketia pointed to the unresolved parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, where six months after the 2024 general election, no Member of Parliament has been declared. He described this situation as symptomatic of deeper dysfunction at the Commission.
“Six months on after the election, and we still don’t have an elected MP. That must tell you something is wrong,” he said.
He also referenced previous high-profile failures, including the disenfranchisement of the SALL constituency in the 2020 general elections and alleged irregularities in the Ayawaso West by-election, arguing that the current EC has not successfully conducted a single credible election since assuming office.
“This Commission, as presently constituted, took over the reins of the Electoral Commission, and they have never done a satisfactory election,” he noted.
Mr Nketia stressed the urgent need to restore the EC as a credible and competent institution that serves the public interest, not political expediency.
“Resetting the EC means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose. The way it is existing now, it is not fit for purpose,” he warned.
He further cautioned that continued support for the current EC leadership risks eroding Ghana’s democratic reputation on the global stage.
“If in any serious country we want to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what the country is about,” he said.
