Few expected the second leg at the San Siro to match the drama of last week’s six-goal first leg in Barcelona, but what unfolded was even more gripping. Inter Milan looked to be cruising after first-half goals put them 2-0 up and 5-3 ahead overall. But Barcelona, true to form, fought back fiercely.
Three unanswered goals from the visitors — the last coming from Raphinha in the 87th minute — gave them the aggregate lead for the first time. However, Francesco Acerbi, at 37, netted his first-ever goal in European competition to level the tie once again and force extra time.
In the added period, substitute Davide Frattesi etched his name into Inter history with the winning goal, sending the San Siro into a frenzy and sealing their place in the Champions League final.
“This semi-final gave us everything,” Shearer said on Amazon Prime. “From start to finish, last week to this week — pure entertainment. What we’ve witnessed is something very special.”
The 13 goals scored over both legs tie this clash with Liverpool’s 2018 showdown against Roma as the highest-scoring Champions League semi-final of all time.
Inter Milan will now face the winner of Wednesday’s second leg between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. PSG carry a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in London.
