Telecel Ghana, through its charitable arm—the Telecel Ghana Foundation—has launched this year’s edition of the Telecel Homecoming Initiative, a nationwide health relief programme aimed at paying the hospital bills of financially stranded patients to enable them to return home to their families.
Speaking at the official launch at the Achimota Hospital, Rita Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, revealed that last year’s Homecoming initiative paid off the medical bills of over 200 patients across Ghana’s southern, middle, and northern belts.
“This year, our goal is to discharge about 300 patients and give their families some relief as well,” she said. “Every year, we meet mothers and babies who are perfectly healthy but can’t go home simply because they can’t afford to pay their hospital bills. Through this initiative, we are giving them back their dignity, their families, and their peace.”
The Telecel Homecoming is part of the company’s Connected Health Initiative, one of several social impact projects under the Telecel Ghana Foundation. The programme will move from the southern belt—covering Achimota Hospital, Swedru, and Sogakope—through the middle belt, including Asam Government Hospital, Jaso Municipal Hospital, and Konongo Odumase Government Hospital, before concluding in the northern belt at Tamale West District Hospital, Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu, and Salaga District Hospital.
Beyond helping families, the initiative also addresses a critical national concern — the no-bed syndrome. “By paying off bills and discharging patients who have long been medically cleared, we are freeing up hospital beds to reduce congestion and enable healthcare facilities to serve more people,” Ms Rockson explained.
She also highlighted the Foundation’s other key health programmes, including Health First, which offers mass health screenings, and the Rural Ultrasound Project, which provides essential prenatal scans for pregnant women in underserved areas. “We have screened over 10,000 pregnant women and 20,000 people through these programmes,” she noted. “And to ensure sustainability, we also register beneficiaries onto the National Health Insurance Scheme.”
Madam Rita Rockson expressed gratitude to the Ghana Health Service, Medical Reforms Africa, and hospital administrators across the country for partnering with Telecel Ghana in delivering these life-changing interventions.
“To every patient who walks out of the hospital today free at last — know that you are seen, valued, and supported,” she said warmly. “Together, we are proving that when humanity leads, healing follows.”
The Telecel Homecoming continues to embody the company’s vision of using compassion and corporate responsibility to drive real social change — one family reunion at a time.
