The Presidential Election Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that all suspended or forfeited members of the party will lose their voting rights until they formally complete the process of reinstatement.
The directive was issued by the Committee’s Chairman, Joseph Osei Owusu, a former Member of Parliament for Bekwai, during a press briefing on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Mr Osei Owusu clarified that party members who contested against NPP candidates or openly campaigned for rival candidates automatically forfeit their membership and therefore cannot enjoy any privileges, including voting rights or holding positions, until they are reaccepted through proper channels.
“You lose membership when you contest against a party candidate or when you campaign for a candidate other than the party’s candidate. It is automatic,” he said.
“The party’s amnesty was specific that anybody who has a punishment hanging over their heads has been granted amnesty, except those who have forfeited their membership. If you have forfeited your membership, then apply.”
The former Deputy Speaker of Parliament added that even after rejoining, such members must serve a two-year period before qualifying to contest for any internal position.
“If you had a voting right and you lost your membership, you may have rejoined, but you don’t return to your position. You are starting afresh; therefore, you do not qualify,” he emphasised.
Preparation for 2026 Presidential Primaries
Mr Osei Owusu further disclosed that the Committee will present the official voter album to the presidential aspirants on November 13, 2025, as part of preparations for the party’s presidential primaries in January 2026.
He expressed confidence that the Committee is fully prepared to deliver a credible and transparent internal election, which will determine the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The presidential race has drawn five key contenders:
- Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
- Former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
- Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and Abetifi MP Dr Bryan Acheampong
- Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong
- Former Minister of Education Dr Osei Adutwum
