Surgical Cases Halted at KATH Over Acute Water Shortage

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have suspended all surgical procedures due to a critical water shortage, raising concerns about patient care and hospital hygiene.

The crisis, which has persisted for over a week, has made it unsafe to carry out surgeries, prompting the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association to issue a memo on March 25, formally notifying hospital management of the decision to temporarily suspend admissions and surgical operations.

The memo emphasised that water is essential for maintaining surgical hygiene, sterilising equipment, and ensuring overall patient care. The current shortage, however, has severely compromised these basic functions, making it impossible to continue operations safely.

“This memo is to formally inform management of the decision taken by the Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorate to temporarily halt the admission of new patients until water supply is restored,” the statement read.

Dr Michael Leat, Chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, reassured the public that doctors will continue to manage existing cases but insisted that the suspension remains necessary to prevent potential health hazards.

He further called on hospital authorities and relevant stakeholders to urgently address the crisis and ensure a reliable water supply to prevent further disruptions to healthcare services.

Meanwhile, patients and their families have expressed frustration over the situation, urging authorities to intervene swiftly before the shortage leads to critical medical complications at one of Ghana’s largest referral hospitals.
