This was disclosed by Dr Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, who confirmed that the initiative is already receiving strong backing from corporate Ghana.
President Mahama announced the creation of the Fund on Friday, August 15, 2025, during the state funeral service for the eight individuals who perished in the crash. He stressed that the initiative would provide long-term support, covering the children’s education, welfare, and overall well-being.
The government expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank Ghana, which provided an initial seed donation of $41,600, alongside contributions from:
- Procus GH Limited
- GB Foods Ghana
- Sunda FM Manufacturing Ltd
- Sage Distribution Ltd
- Quantum Oil Terminals
- Quantum LPG Logistics Ltd
- Newgas Cylinder Ltd
- Quantum Terminals PLC
Dr Sawyerr explained that donations can be made through Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited (Stanbic Heights Branch, Accra) into dedicated cedi and dollar accounts. Cheques and bank drafts should be made payable to CHILDREN SUPPORT FUND 6825. She further noted that, in line with transparency, a weekly list of donors will be published.
The Fund is a reflection of the government’s pledge to honour the sacrifices of the victims by ensuring their children are protected and supported into the future. It is expected to continue attracting contributions from individuals, institutions, and organisations.
The tragic August 6, 2025 crash occurred when a military helicopter carrying senior government officials, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Murtala Muhammed, and six others, went down in the Adansi Akrofoum District, Ashanti Region, killing all eight onboard.
The incident sparked nationwide grief, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum, the security services, and the general public.
At the state funeral on August 15, attended by President Mahama, senior officials, security personnel, traditional leaders, and grieving families, the victims were laid to rest. It was at this solemn event that the President announced the Children’s Support Fund, a legacy of care and protection for the children left behind.
