Single-Digit Inflation Is Just the Start—Government Statistician

Government Statistician Dr Alhassan Iddrisu has cautioned that Ghana’s return to single-digit inflation is only the beginning of a longer economic journey, stressing that sustained discipline in public spending, strong support for local food production, and effective policy coordination are crucial to maintaining the current momentum.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, October 8, Dr Iddrisu reacted to the September 2025 inflation figures, which showed a decline to 9.4%, the first single-digit rate in four years.

“We can actually do this by continuing to do what we are doing, which is keeping the inflation down,” he said. “This will include keeping public spending disciplined, supporting local food production and also maintaining policy coordination.”

Dr Iddrisu warned against any sense of victory, explaining that although inflation has slowed, prices are still rising—just at a slower pace.

“This is not the time to relax at all. In fact, inflation of 9.4% still means that on average, we are seeing the general price level increasing by 9.4% between September of last year and September of this year,” he clarified.

He described the single-digit figure as “progress”, but underscored that the real challenge is sustaining it over the long term.

“Yes, we’ve brought it to single digits, but we shouldn’t relax at all. It is progress, but the goal now should be: how do we sustain this single-digit inflation? That is the most important question,” he stated.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, the drop in inflation was largely driven by easing food prices, with food inflation falling from 14.8% in August to 11% in September. Non-food inflation also edged down slightly to 8.2%, contributing to the overall decline.

Dr Iddrisu concluded that stability must now translate into lasting economic growth and tangible relief for households.

“This is how we can turn this stability into lasting growth and then real relief for households,” he added.
