The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has revealed that dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has failed to provide credible details on how he acquired a 2019 Lamborghini Urus at the centre of an FBI-backed fraud investigation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 21, EOCO disclosed that the musician, during interrogation, admitted he could not identify the individual from whom he purchased the luxury car. He only claimed to have bought it “from the street” through someone possibly called “ZAK”, whose contact details he says he has discarded.
The anti-graft agency noted that Shatta Wale has been unable to produce receipts, transfer documents, or ownership papers for the vehicle. The only record in his possession is a customs declaration form bearing the name of Nana Kwabena Amuah, a convicted fraudster currently serving an 86-month sentence in the United States.
“So far, Charles Nii Armah Mensah does not also possess any documentation in terms of receipt or transfer documents which shows that he owns or purchased the said vehicle except a customs declaration document in his possession bearing the name of Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently in jail,” EOCO stated.
The Lamborghini, seized in May at the request of the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), has been linked to Amuah’s $4 million fraud scheme. A U.S. District Court in Kentucky has since authorised the repatriation of the car as restitution.
EOCO confirmed that Shatta Wale was granted bail of GH₵10 million with two sureties after hours of interrogation on Wednesday night. However, investigators stressed that his inability to account for the vehicle’s purchase deepens suspicions surrounding its acquisition.
The office further indicated that the musician remains a person of interest in the joint Ghana-U.S. probe and may be recalled for further questioning as investigations continue.
