Shared Innovation and Partnerships Will Define Ghana’s Digital Future – Ofosu Ampofo

Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Policy Adviser for Political Affairs at the Office of the Vice President, set the tone for the opening of the 2025 National ICT Week in Accra, where Ghana reaffirmed its ambition to become Africa’s leading digital trade hub.

The four-day event, themed “Ghana as Africa’s Digital Trade Hub – Innovation, Policy, and Partnerships for the Future,” has drawn together policymakers, industry leaders, technology firms, fintech innovators, and development partners to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice President, Dr. Ofosu Ampofo highlighted the remarkable strides the country has made in creating an enabling environment for digital trade.

“Our people have nurtured an enterprising culture, and our institutions continue to earn the trust of citizens and investors alike. With a diverse and dynamic economy, Ghana is well-positioned to lead the continent in digital trade,” he said.

He pointed to landmark initiatives such as the 24-Hour Economy and the One Million Coders Project, which are designed to boost productivity and equip the youth with critical digital skills.

Dr. Ampofo also underscored Ghana’s pioneering role in digital payments, noting that the country remains the only one in Africa with fully interoperable instant payment systems—a milestone that has accelerated mobile money adoption, expanded financial inclusion, and spurred e-commerce growth.

The Vice President’s adviser emphasized that Ghana is not only advancing digital services but also securing the foundations of trust. “By harmonizing our regulatory frameworks with continental standards, we are strengthening cybersecurity, protecting data privacy, and building the confidence needed for businesses and consumers to thrive in the digital space,” he said.

He added that Ghana is expanding its national fiber-optic backbone and streamlining access to services through Ghana.Gov, which consolidates applications for passports, tax payments, and licensing.

Mohammed Adam Sukparu, Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, announced that government will soon introduce new legislation in Parliament to future-proof Ghana’s digital ecosystem. He stressed that robust legal frameworks would be key to ensuring long-term data protection and consumer confidence.

Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, Acting Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), outlined the activities for the week, which include seminars, exhibitions, panel discussions, a startup pitch competition, the launch of an e-commerce guidebook, and the screening of a documentary on digital trust.

The event has attracted broad participation from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Communications and Digital Technology and Innovations, the AfCFTA Secretariat, Bank of Ghana, leading telecom and fintech companies, academia, and international development partners such as the World Bank, GIZ, and UNDP.

Ultimately, National ICT Week is not only a showcase of Ghana’s digital progress but also a call to action for deeper collaboration. As Dr. Ampofo told participants, Ghana’s readiness to lead Africa’s digital trade revolution will depend on the collective will of government, industry, and global partners to transform innovation into impact.
