The Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) has so far placed a total of 534,672 candidates into senior high schools (SHSs) and technical and vocational institutions across the country, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed.
This figure includes 52,492 students who used the self-placement option, in addition to the initial 483,800 candidates automatically placed when the exercise began on September 17, 2025.
According to the GES, the placement exercise, which covers both public and selected private second-cycle schools, has been largely successful. However, resolution centres set up nationwide have received 9,000 complaints from parents and candidates, with the Greater Accra centre recording the highest number at 4,000 cases.
The Head of Public Relations at the GES, Daniel Fenyi, explained that most of the complaints revolve around requests to change schools.
“About 76 per cent of candidates are requesting to move from Category ‘B’ and ‘C’ schools to Category ‘A’ schools. Unfortunately, spaces in Category ‘A’ schools are limited and already filled,” he said.
Mr Fenyi stressed that school changes can only be considered under special conditions, such as health concerns or relocation, while adjustments from day to boarding status are only permitted in cases of long-distance placement.
He added that no-placement cases are being resolved through self-placement and opportunities in approved private SHSs under the Free SHS Programme.
Mr Fenyi further disclosed that the system will accommodate re-entry candidates—students who completed basic education in 2022, 2023, or 2024 but did not take up placement opportunities at the time.
“This comprises qualified candidates from the last three years who could not be placed and want to go to second-cycle schools this year,” he said.
The GES cautioned parents against paying bribes for placement or school changes.
“Parents must remain calm and resist paying money to have their issues resolved. Anybody demanding money for placement or school change should be reported immediately,” Mr Fenyi warned.
This year’s CSSPS covers 724 public SHSs and senior high technical schools (SHTSs), 233 technical and vocational institutions (TVIs), and, for the first time, 70 private SHSs under the Free SHS policy.
Out of the 603,328 candidates who sat for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), 590,309 qualified for placement.
The initial 483,800 successfully placed students represented 82 per cent of qualified candidates, with the rest resolving their status through self-placement or pending cases.
Meanwhile, parents continue to throng the resolution centres to resolve placement issues. One parent, Stephen Badu, recounted how his niece mistakenly chose a school outside Accra during self-placement without informing her guardians.
“She said her friend told her to select the school in the Eastern Region. But we wanted her in a day school in Accra to commute from home. That is why we are here,” he said.
All placed students are expected to report to their respective schools on October 18, 2025.
The GES says it is working around the clock to resolve outstanding complaints to ensure a smooth transition for all candidates.
