The leadership of the Saviour Church of Ghana has begun preparations for a mass burial to honor 16 young members who tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident on the Atwedie stretch of the Kumasi-Accra highway.
The victims, all part of the Church’s Youth Ministry from Obogu in the Asante Akyem South Municipality, were returning from a church event held in the Eastern Region on Monday, July 28, when their vehicle collided with a fuel tanker around 2:30 p.m.
Four other members who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Juaso Government Hospital and are reported to be responding well, according to church officials.
Deputy Secretary of the Church, Kwabena Owusu, speaking to Citi News, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and confirmed that the Church leadership is working closely with affected families to arrange a unified burial.
“We attended a youth program at our national headquarters, and unfortunately, one of our vehicles was involved in a fatal accident,” he said.
“We have arranged with the leadership of the Church to liaise with the families to set up a date to have a mass burial for all of them.”
The tragic incident has left the Obogu community and the entire church in shock and mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the country. Families, congregants, and sympathizers continue to gather to support one another as funeral preparations begin.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by local authorities.
