In a major consumer relief breakthrough, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has announced a landmark subscription arrangement between the government of Ghana and MultiChoice Africa.
The agreement, which takes effect on October 1, 2025, will see DStv subscribers enjoy automatic upgrades, additional channels, and significant cost savings.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, September 29, Mr George disclosed that the deal goes beyond the government’s initial demand for a 30 per cent reduction in subscription fees.
Instead, the package secures value savings ranging from 33 to 50 per cent across all bouquets, offering much-needed relief to households grappling with rising living costs.
“Effectively, MultiChoice has offered value over and above what we expected of them. I went into this with a request for 30 per cent. With what we have discussed here, the lowest is 33 per cent, and the highest is 50 per cent.
This reduces pressure on Ghanaian households while ensuring the sustainability of the DStv service in Ghana,” the minister emphasised.
Under the new structure, subscribers will experience automatic upgrades:
- Family package customers will be upgraded to the Access bouquet valued at GHC 99, with 35 additional channels, including live football matches.
- Compact subscribers will move up to Compact Plus, while those on Compact Plus will be upgraded to Premium.
- Premium subscribers will continue to access all flagship content and will automatically qualify for competitions to win fully paid trips to selected English Premier League matches.
In addition, MultiChoice Africa has pledged a GHC 555 subsidy for new customers purchasing the Zappa decoder and dish kit, reflecting its commitment to supporting affordability and accessibility.
Responding to concerns about piracy and cross-border content theft, Mr George revealed that steps are already underway to block unauthorised foreign decoders, including some Nigerian devices.
He assured the public that such measures will be intensified to safeguard consumer rights and the integrity of DStv services in Ghana.
The minister described the deal as a milestone in the government’s consumer protection agenda, stressing that it was achieved after extensive negotiations focused on maximising value for Ghanaian households.
“This agreement is not just about pay-TV. It is about protecting consumers, reducing household costs, and ensuring that digital entertainment services operate in a competitive and sustainable environment,” he noted.
