The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) has suspended its planned nationwide strike slated for Tuesday, September 30, 2025, after receiving a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) to return to the negotiation table.
In a letter dated September 24 and addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, the Union confirmed that instead of striking, it will appear before the Commission for talks on the same day.
“The Commission has directed that we stay our intended action and appear for negotiations on 30th September 2025. We remain committed to this process and will honour the Commission’s directive in good faith,” said the Union’s General Secretary.
The suspension averts what would have been a crippling halt to Ghana’s railway services, as workers had planned to withdraw their services to protest 12 months of unpaid salaries owed by the Ghana Railway Company Limited, with arrears dating back to October 2024.
The Union had earlier accused authorities of ignoring lawful avenues for negotiation despite repeated appeals, citing the severe hardship its members face—including financial distress, broken homes, health complications, and disrupted education for their children.
While the Union’s tone is conciliatory, it has made clear the suspension is conditional.
“Should our demands remain unresolved after the scheduled negotiations, we shall proceed with our intended action on a new date, which will be duly communicated to your office and the public,” the letter cautioned.
The dispute over unpaid wages has simmered for months. In May 2025, railway workers staged an indefinite strike over seven months of arrears, paralysing passenger services across the country. That action was suspended after government assurances, but workers say little has changed since then.
The RWU has assured that any future action will be conducted peacefully and in compliance with public order regulations. The Union has previously requested police protection during planned picketing at the Ministry of Transport, Parliament, and other key state institutions.
