Public Transport Fares to Rise 20% from August 8

Public transport fares across Ghana will increase by 20% from Friday, August 8, 2025, following a directive from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) in collaboration with transport unions.

A statement signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman, said the adjustment is in line with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares and has become necessary due to persistent cost pressures on operators.

The Council explained that despite a 15% fare reduction in May this year, the cost of spare parts and other goods and services has not reduced accordingly. The introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy has also pushed fuel prices up by about 8%, significantly increasing operational costs. In addition, worsening road conditions have led to higher vehicle maintenance expenses, further burdening drivers and transport companies.

The new fares will apply to shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” services, long-distance intercity transport, and haulage. All transport operators have been instructed to comply with the new rates and post them visibly at loading terminals.

The Council appealed to commuters, operators, and the general public to cooperate for the smooth implementation of the revised fares. It added that while the last adjustment in May was a reduction due to favourable fuel pricing and government intervention, the current economic situation and infrastructure challenges have made the increase unavoidable.
