PROTOA Elects New Executives to Tackle Transport Woes

The Progressive Transport Owners Association, Ghana (PROTOA), has elected a new crop of executives tasked with revitalising and steering the affairs of the association amidst growing challenges in the country’s transport sector.

The elected executives include positions for Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, and Welfare Officer, whose terms begin with a clear mandate to improve conditions for members and enhance coordination with key stakeholders in the transport ecosystem.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), urged the newly elected leaders to act with integrity and purpose.

“The transport sector is riddled with complex and often discouraging challenges. While the outgoing officers, elected in 2021, did their best, I trust the new team will collaborate with other unions to elevate the standards and efficiency of the transport system nationwide,” Alhaji Abbas stated.

One of the newly elected officers, Greater Accra Treasurer-elect Ibrahim Ossumanu, pledged unwavering commitment to the association’s goals, emphasising the need for unity and collaboration in solving sector-wide issues.

“PROTOA has made strides by partnering with other unions and the National Road Safety Authority, but there is still work to be done. I will ensure that, in my capacity as treasurer, I support the team to achieve the long-desired transformation in the sector,” he said.

Founded in 1987, PROTOA has long advocated for the welfare of transport owners, striving to foster professionalism, safety, and efficiency within Ghana’s road transport system.

The newly sworn-in executives are expected to immediately begin engagements with relevant authorities and union bodies to tackle pressing issues such as fare adjustments, fuel costs, poor road infrastructure, and passenger safety. Their leadership will be crucial as the industry adapts to evolving transportation needs and the rising demand for quality service.
