Ghana head coach Otto Addo has played down suggestions of mounting pressure ahead of the Black Stars’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR), stressing that his side remains composed, focused, and ready to finish the campaign on a strong note.
Ghana currently leads Group I with 19 points, three ahead of Madagascar and four clear of Comoros, with just two games left to determine qualification. The match against CAR, scheduled for 16:00 GMT at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknès, could prove pivotal in securing Ghana’s place at the global showpiece.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the encounter, Addo dismissed any notion that the high stakes have unsettled his squad.
“The so-called pressure that we have right now is normal,” Addo said. “When we are first and there are just two matches to go, it’s expected. The players are experienced enough. Surely, we have some young ones, but we also have experienced players who will guide them.”
The coach, who previously worked as an assistant at Borussia Dortmund, explained that the team is approaching the match with a blend of calmness and tactical precision. He highlighted the importance of striking early to set the tone.
“I’m just hoping that we can have an early goal—it will make things easier,” he noted, adding that early dominance could neutralise any potential nerves.
Otto Addo has built his current squad around a mix of seasoned professionals and promising talents. With key players in peak form, the Black Stars are expected to adopt a controlled but assertive approach to keep CAR at bay.
“Consistency is the key to success,” Addo emphasised. “If you make too many changes, it’s difficult for the players to connect.” His comments suggest that Ghana will maintain much of the core that has brought them success throughout the qualifiers, avoiding unnecessary tactical overhauls at this critical stage.
Ghana’s dominance in Group I puts them in pole position, but a slip-up could throw the qualification race wide open. CAR, known for their physical and counter-attacking style, will be eager to spoil Ghana’s ambitions.
The Black Stars have enjoyed a strong run at home and neutral venues in this qualifying campaign, and Addo’s calm demeanour reflects confidence in his side’s ability to handle the pressure of expectation.
A win against CAR would put Ghana in a commanding position going into their final group match. Beyond the immediate objective of securing three points, the team is also looking to build momentum and cohesion ahead of next year’s continental engagements.
