President Kagame to Open MWC25 Kigali as Africa’s Digital Future Takes Centre Stage

The GSMA has announced that His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, will officially open MWC25 Kigali on 21 October 2025 at the Kigali Convention Centre, marking the third consecutive time he has inaugurated the continent’s flagship digital economy event.

The announcement underscores Rwanda’s growing role as a hub for digital policy dialogue and innovation in Africa, with MWC Kigali fast becoming the premier platform for government, business, and technology leaders to shape Africa’s digital trajectory.

“We are delighted and honoured to welcome His Excellency Paul Kagame to MWC Kigali once again, where we will gather with innovators, policymakers, and business leaders to address the critical issues driving Africa’s digital ambitions,” said Vivek Badrinath, Director General of GSMA.
“I look forward to engaging with leaders from various sectors to shape the next chapter of Africa’s digital transformation—from smartphone affordability and AI adoption to connectivity and fintech solutions.”

MWC25 Kigali will bring together government officials, enterprise executives, and start-up innovators from across the technology ecosystem to explore how innovation can accelerate Africa’s digital transformation.

The event will centre on four core themes:

In response to rising demand for specialised insights, the agenda includes several focused summits, such as a two-day Fintech Summit, dedicated 5G sessions, and the debut of a Security Summit.

For the first time, the GSMA Ministerial Programme — an exclusive, invitation-only platform for senior policymakers and regulators — will feature on the MWC Kigali agenda. The programme will explore critical policy and regulatory issues shaping Africa’s digitalisation, including artificial intelligence and spectrum management.

In another first, the Orange Social Ventures Prize will be awarded at MWC Kigali, celebrating innovative social entrepreneurs from Africa and the Middle East. Additionally, the Future of Education & Work in Africa (FEWA) forum will co-locate at the event, bringing together AI experts, policymakers, and innovators to design scalable solutions for education and workforce development.

MWC25 Kigali’s expansive programme is made possible through strong partnerships with leading global and regional organisations. Founding and headline sponsors Huawei, MTN, and ZTE join industry sponsor Orange, alongside event partners Rwanda’s Ministry of ICT and Innovation (MINICT) and Smart Africa.

The three-day event is expected to shape the policy frameworks, business models, and technological innovations that will drive Africa’s digital economy for the next decade.
