Police Seize 1,195 Boxes of Tramadol in Nalerigu; Six Arrested in Major Bust

The North EastRegional Police Command has intercepted a massive consignment of 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as “Red”, in an anti-narcotics operation at Gbintiri near Nalerigu.

The September 18, 2025, operation, carried out in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), led to the arrest of six suspects believed to be part of a cross-border drug trafficking syndicate.

According to a police statement, two trucks suspected of transporting illicit substances—registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14—were intercepted after crossing into Ghana from Sankase in the Republic of Togo.

“A search of the trucks uncovered the 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg concealed among other goods in the truck with registration number GR 1712-16. The exhibits have since been secured for evidential purposes,” the statement read.

The suspects have been identified as Alhassan Braimah, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Iddrisu, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the consignment was destined for Ayorik, who was to deliver the drugs to an accomplice in Gushegu. During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted their roles in the smuggling operation.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabik Anmain, Public Affairs Officer for the North East Regional Command, confirmed that all six suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations. He further disclosed that efforts are underway to track down other individuals connected to the syndicate.

The command assured the public of its unwavering commitment to clamp down on the trafficking of restricted drugs, stressing that substances like Tramadol pose severe risks to public health, safety, and security, particularly in northern Ghana, where abuse remains a growing concern.
