Police Intercept 33,000 Rounds of Ammunition at Tadzewu Barrier

Police personnel stationed at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa barrier in the Volta Region have intercepted a large cache of ammunition during a routine inspection in the early hours of Friday, April 18, 2025.

At around 3:30 a.m., officers stopped a Hyundai bus with registration number GR 8246-Q travelling from Accra to Benin. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed 60 cartons of AAA cartridges (15,000 rounds) and 72 cartons of BB cartridges (18,000 rounds)—a total of 33,000 rounds of ammunition concealed in sacks beneath passenger luggage.

The driver, Abasou Fousseni (45), and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu (38), were immediately arrested for questioning. Though both initially denied knowledge of the cargo, preliminary investigations and police intelligence pointed to the co-driver as the one who loaded the ammunition into the bus.

The driver has since been granted police enquiry bail to continue the journey with the passengers, while the co-driver remains in custody. He is expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

A press release signed by DSP Felix Danku, of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in the Volta Region, emphasised the Service’s resolve to clamp down on transnational crimes and safeguard national and regional security.

“We remain vigilant in our operations and committed to ensuring that our borders are not used as conduits for illegal activity,” the statement read.
