Parliament Approves New Holiday Reforms: Republic Day Returns, “Shaqq Day” Introduced

Ghana’s holiday calendar is set for a major overhaul following Parliament’s approval of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The revised legislation redefines several key national observances, restores historical landmarks, and enhances religious inclusivity.

Among the most significant changes is the reinstatement of July 1 as Republic Day, a formal recognition of Ghana’s transition to a republic in 1960. The day was previously removed from the list of statutory holidays but has now regained its place in national memory.

In a move to reflect Ghana’s religious diversity, Parliament also approved the introduction of “Shaqq Day”, a new public holiday for the Muslim community. To be observed the day after Eid-ul-Fitr, Shaqq Day is meant to allow Muslims additional time for reflection and celebration following the month-long Ramadan fast.

The bill also addresses long-standing debates around Ghana’s historical figures. It repeals August 4 as Founders’ Day—which previously celebrated multiple independence-era leaders—and restores September 21 as Founder’s Day in honour of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the country’s first president and a central figure in the independence movement.

Another practical feature of the amended legislation is the provision granting the president the authority to shift midweek public holidays that fall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays to either the preceding Friday or the following Monday. This move is intended to boost productivity and offer better planning flexibility for businesses and the general public.

Announcing the bill’s passage, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor stated:

“Honourable members, the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Amendment Bill 2025 is duly read the third time and passed.”
