Over 461,000 Final-Year SHS Students Begin 2025 WASSCE Today

A total of 461,640 final-year Senior High School (SHS) students across Ghana are officially beginning the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (SCs) today, Monday, August 4.

The massive nationwide exercise includes 207,381 males and 254,259 females, marking a slight increase of 1,029 candidates over last year’s total of 460,611.

This year’s WASSCE SC begins with practical project work in vocational and technical subjects such as basketry, ceramics, graphic design, jewellery, and leatherwork, which will run through to Friday, August 22.

This is the fourth batch of final-year SHS students sitting for the “Ghana Only Version” of the WASSCE, after the other member countries of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC)—Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia—returned to the traditional May/June WASSCE calendar. Ghana’s academic timetable, reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, still operates on what authorities have termed the “new normal” calendar.

Students from 701 SHSs will sit for this year’s exams at 701 designated centres nationwide. These centres will be supervised and monitored by a robust team comprising

In a significant support measure, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the release of GH¢15,849,920 to cover the practical fees for the 2025 WASSCE nationwide.

The move is to ensure schools are fully equipped to carry out the practical examinations, particularly in science, vocational, and technical disciplines.

According to a press statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, the funds are meant to provide essential resources and materials required to conduct the practicals smoothly.

“The GES seeks to facilitate a smooth and well-coordinated examination process that enables students to focus on their academic work while relieving parents and guardians of any such financial burden,” the statement read.

This intervention aligns with the government’s broader commitment to removing financial barriers to education, especially in crucial final exams, and ensuring that every candidate, regardless of background, has access to the tools they need to succeed.

The GES emphasised that schools are expected to make judicious use of the funds and ensure that no student is disadvantaged during the practical phase of the WASSCE.
