OSP Seizes Over $8.3 Million in Assets Linked to NPA Scandal

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has announced major progress in its ongoing investigations into the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) scandal, revealing that it has seized and frozen assets valued at more than $8.3 million (GH¢100 million) and over $100,000 in cash.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, November 4, the OSP said additional properties are currently being traced as part of efforts to recover suspected illicit assets linked to alleged corruption and money laundering within the Authority.

“The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has already seized and frozen assets valued at more than GH¢100 million and over US$100,000, with additional assets under active tracing,” the statement read.

The OSP explained that the seizures were backed by strong documentary, banking, and transaction evidence, which allegedly links the assets to proceeds of unlawful activity.

“These actions are based on strong documentary, banking, and transaction evidence linking the proceeds to the alleged offences,” the Office added.

Officials said the ongoing operation forms part of the OSP’s wider mandate to uphold transparency, protect state resources, and ensure accountability in the management of public institutions.

“This case represents a major step in protecting public funds, ensuring accountability in the petroleum sector, and affirming that no public official is above the law,” the OSP noted.

The Office stressed that the asset recovery initiative underscores its commitment to tackling corruption and illicit financial flows, adding that those implicated in serious economic crimes will not escape scrutiny.

“The seriousness of the charges and the scale of the alleged losses make this prosecution a critical test of Ghana’s commitment to fighting corruption,” the OSP emphasised.

Background of the NPA Scandal

The high-profile investigation centres on the former Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, and six other officials, who are accused of financial misappropriation and causing financial loss to the state during their time in office.

The case has attracted widespread public interest due to the strategic role of the NPA in Ghana’s petroleum industry and the magnitude of the alleged financial irregularities.

The OSP has vowed to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion, reaffirming that its actions are intended to send a clear message that corruption will not go unpunished, regardless of the individuals involved.
