The Western Regional Police Command has intensified a manhunt for four armed robbers involved in a violent daylight attack on a gold-buying shop at Teleku Bokazo, in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.
According to police in Esiama, a distress call was received at about 5:30 p.m. on the day of the incident, alerting officers that six heavily armed men—wielding AK-47 rifles and machetes—had stormed the premises of a local gold dealer.
Police responded swiftly, engaging the suspects in a hot pursuit as they attempted to flee toward the nearby Salman community. The chase resulted in a gun battle, during which one of the suspects, 34-year-old Abdul Rahman, sustained serious gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead at the St. Martin De Porres Hospital in Ekwie.
Before his death, Rahman reportedly revealed the identities of some of his accomplices, including one Mohammed, to the police.
Initial investigations at the crime scene revealed that the robbers shot and inflicted machete wounds on two employees of the gold-buying shop. The victims, Samuel Appiah, 29, and Kwamena Nketiah, 45, are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
Further police operations on August 1 led to the arrest of 25-year-old Mohammed Adamu, who is believed to be one of the suspects named by the deceased. He is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
A subsequent search of the area where the robbers fled yielded a cache of evidence, including:
- Seven spent AK-47 shells
- Eight live rounds of AK-47 ammunition
- Two used BB cartridges and one empty BB casing
- Two motorcycle keys
The Western Regional Police Command has assured the public that an intensive search is underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring them to justice. It has also appealed to residents within the Salman and Teleku Bokazo areas to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station.
Authorities say they are determined to clamp down on criminal activities in the region, especially those targeting the mining sector and associated businesses.
