One Arrested in Ridge Hospital Assault – Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that one person has been arrested in connection with the assault on health staff at the Ridge Hospital in Accra, while another suspect remains at large.

Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Tony Goodman, disclosed the update in an interview on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, August 20.

He noted that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh personally intervened to ensure a swift response and protection for the victims.

“The minister went to Ridge when the incident happened… The minister got there, gave a clear directive, spoke with the Greater Accra Regional Command, made sure that the persons involved got medical care and reported to the police station, met management and told them how he was ready to provide additional security, and assured them the gentleman involved would face the full rigour of the law,” Goodman said.

He added that the main perpetrator managed to escape before police could apprehend him. “On his way, a gentleman came—we cannot say that he knows him. He was later informed by the hospital management that the said gentleman is the perpetrator of the crime. The police arrived, and the guy fled; his accomplice was arrested,” Goodman explained.

Speaking later on Asempa FM, Health Minister Akandoh confirmed the arrest and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to justice and due process.

“We as a health ministry—we are investigating the matter. Anyone who will tell you there hasn’t been any arrest – then that person is unwilling to help solve the matter,” he stressed.

He urged the public to allow the police to conclude their investigations, saying, “Let’s leave the police to do their work. I don’t want to mention names, but whoever had a role to play in that incident, the police must do their work so they are brought to book. As a minister responsible for the sector, whatever I have to do [to ensure justice] will be done.”

Mr Akandoh further assured that operations at Ridge Hospital have not been disrupted. “My reports show the system is running. I have received briefings from the man in charge at the hospital,” he noted.
