NPP’s 2024 election defeat: Committee presents investigative report to national leadership

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is reeling with “sorrow and grief” after Wednesday’s catastrophic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two senior government ministers.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party described the incident as both a personal tragedy for the victims’ families and a profound loss to the nation.

“Their passing is not only a devastating blow to their families but also a profound loss to the entire nation they worked to protect and build. We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” the statement read.

Mr. Kodua Frimpong noted that no words could capture the anguish of the moment, praying for the Almighty God to grant comfort and strength to the affected families. He also called for a “thorough, transparent, and swift investigation” into the cause of the crash, stressing that the dignity of the lives lost demands answers and accountability to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The NPP leader urged Ghanaians to stand together in unity, prayer, and compassion, consoling and strengthening the families left behind.

The crash, which occurred on August 6, 2025, near Adansi Brofeyedu in the Adansi Akrofuom District, involved a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter that had taken off from Accra at 9:12 a.m. en route to Obuasi. The aircraft went off radar before eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing flames engulf the helicopter. The wreckage was later found burnt beyond recognition, with no visible signs of survivors.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, addressing the nation, confirmed that flags will fly at half-mast nationwide until further notice in honor of the deceased, describing the event as “a national tragedy of unimaginable proportions.”

The victims included:

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Ghana Armed Forces and relevant authorities.
