NPP, Coalition of Political Parties Protest in Accra Over Chief Justice Suspension

The streets of Accra are expected to swell today, Monday, May 5, as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and several allied parties stage a protest against what they describe as a dangerous assault on judicial independence, following the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The demonstration, which includes support from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM), marks a significant political escalation ahead of December’s elections.

At the heart of the protest is a claim by the NPP that the Chief Justice’s suspension, allegedly orchestrated by individuals close to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), violates the Constitution and threatens to undermine public trust in the judiciary.

“This is not a partisan issue — it’s a national concern,” said NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong. “Ghanaians must resist any attempt to politicise the judiciary. What is happening now is a clear breach of constitutional procedure.”

The action has drawn mixed reactions across Ghana’s political and legal landscape. While the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has slammed the suspension as unconstitutional and called for its reversal, some constitutional experts argue that due process must take its course.

Dr John Osae-Kwapong of the CDD-Ghana noted that the suspension, while controversial, should be assessed through legal channels rather than political mobilisation.

The Ghana Police Service has pledged to ensure that today’s protest proceeds without incident, with traffic and crowd control measures in place.

With just months to the 2025 general elections, today’s protest is being closely watched as a potential bellwether for political mobilisation, public sentiment, and the role of judicial accountability in Ghana’s democratic future.
