The Director-General of the National Information Technology Authority (NITA), Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, has announced that the government will soon roll out a regulatory framework to ensure that only accredited and certified e-commerce businesses are allowed to operate in Ghana.
Speaking during the 2025 National ICT Week, themed “Ghana as Africa’s Digital Trade Hub—Innovation, Policy, and Partnerships for the Future,” Dr. Kevor said the move is aimed at restoring public confidence in online transactions, which has been undermined by fraudulent practices and unregulated operators.
“Many Ghanaians have lost hope in online businesses due to unlawful trading. We want to create an enabling environment for online businesses to thrive and also build confidence in customers. Any online business that refuses to be accredited will not be allowed to trade,” Dr. Kevor told Puretvonline.com.
According to him, the accreditation system will serve as a trust mark, guaranteeing customers that online businesses meet established standards set by NITA. This, he stressed, would eliminate fear and uncertainty in digital transactions.
Dr. Kevor further highlighted Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda, pointing to initiatives such as the ICT for Girls program, the One Million Coders project, and strategic collaborations with technology giants including Google, Microsoft, and Huawei. These efforts, he noted, position Ghana to lead Africa’s digital trade revolution.
The 2025 National ICT Week, which runs throughout the week, is expected to provide a platform to:
- Explore Ghana’s digital trade potential through strategic conversations on the nation’s preparedness to serve as Africa’s digital trade hub.
- Shape forward-thinking policies by identifying key reforms required for a competitive digital economy.
- Strengthen digital trust through Ghana’s evolving Digital Trust Framework.
- Showcase innovations in e-commerce, digital payments, and logistics.
- Foster cross-sector collaborations and investment by connecting government, private sector leaders, and global investors.
- Pave the way for a connected data economy with the rollout of a national Data Exchange Hub and strong Data Governance Framework.
Dr. Kevor said the ultimate goal is to consolidate Ghana’s role as a secure, innovative, and reliable digital trade hub for Africa.
