The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has appointed Seyi Onasanya as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective April 1, 2025.
The appointment marks a significant step in Nigeria’s broader strategy to expand digital identity and internet governance on the continent.
Announcing the move, NiRA President Mr. Akinsola Adesanya described Onasanya’s appointment as a strategic milestone in the organisation’s evolution. “Her strong leadership and deep understanding of the Domain Name System (DNS) ecosystem and internet governance will be instrumental in advancing NiRA’s position in this critical digital space,” he said.
NiRA manages Nigeria’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD), “.ng”, which plays a crucial role in the country’s digital economy. The .ng domain serves as a foundational asset for businesses, institutions, and citizens alike, anchoring Nigeria’s digital identity and internet sovereignty efforts.
Onasanya, a seasoned strategist with experience across Africa and Asia, brings over a decade of expertise in business operations, transformation, and leadership development. Her prior roles include senior leadership positions at SNEVA Global Associates, FITC, and PwC, where she drove innovation, organisational strategy, and stakeholder engagement.
Her appointment comes at a time when NiRA is ramping up efforts to boost .ng domain adoption and align digital infrastructure with national development goals. She succeeds Mrs. Eyitayo Iyortim, who was recently elected as Chairperson and President of the African Top-Level Domains (AfTLD)—a move that further affirms NiRA’s growing influence in the continental tech ecosystem.
Onasanya is expected to spearhead initiatives around digital transformation, policy advocacy, and strategic partnerships, with a focus on building trust and accessibility across Nigeria’s digital landscape.
“NiRA is not just a registry—it’s a critical enabler of digital growth and innovation in Nigeria,” said Adesanya. “We believe Seyi’s leadership will elevate our impact and visibility both locally and globally.”
As Nigeria intensifies efforts to localise internet infrastructure and strengthen its digital footprint, Onasanya’s tenure is widely anticipated to usher in a new era of transformation for the country’s digital identity ecosystem.
