The National Identification Authority (NIA) has confirmed the full payment of the 20% Operational Support Allowance owed to its staff for the period January to July 2025.
This development follows days of nationwide industrial action by NIA workers, who had protested the Ministry of Finance’s failure to commit to a clear timeline for settling the outstanding allowance — a critical benefit staff receive in addition to their basic salary.
At a press briefing, Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, announced the resolution of the payment impasse.
“I’m happy to announce that the 20% Staff Operational Allowance is being paid, and the arrears from January to July have been cleared,” Darlas said.
The staff strike, which temporarily disrupted NIA operations across registration centres nationwide, was sparked by delays in the release of the agreed allowances. With no formal assurance from the Ministry of Finance initially, NIA workers suspended services, demanding immediate action.
Following internal negotiations and mounting public concern over the disruption, the Ministry has now fulfilled its financial obligation, allowing for the full resumption of NIA services.
Mr Darlas extended appreciation to the staff for their patience and stakeholders for their support during the challenging period. He also assured the public that the strike had not compromised the security or integrity of the national identity database.
“The NIA was established to manage a credible, secure, and universal identity system. We assure the public that our systems remain robust and fully compliant with legal and data protection standards,” he stated.
