The National Identification Authority (NIA) has commenced the registration of Ghanaian children between the ages of 6 and 14 years at all its premium centres across the country.
The move, according to the Authority, is part of its legal mandate to ensure that every Ghanaian—both at home and abroad—is captured in the National Identity Register (NIR), thereby guaranteeing secure and verifiable identification for all citizens.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, by the Head of Corporate Affairs Directorate, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the NIA described the initiative as “another step forward in building a comprehensive and inclusive identity system that begins from childhood.”
The registration fee for first-time applicants at premium centres is GHS 310, which is in line with the approved charges for premium services.
The NIA indicated that the requirements remain the same as those for applicants aged 15 years and above. Parents or legal guardians are required to present at least one of the following documents to register their children:
- A valid Ghanaian passport of the child; OR
- The original birth certificate of the child; OR
- A Ghana Card holder parent or legal guardian who can vouch for the child.
The Authority further disclosed that starting Monday, 15th September 2025, its online registration and booking system will be extended to cover the 11 remaining premium centres nationwide. This, it explained, is to provide applicants with convenience in scheduling appointments and ensuring a smooth process at the centres.
Applicants are encouraged to take advantage of the online booking platform to avoid long queues and delays.
The NIA assured parents and guardians that children already registered under the new category will soon receive their Ghana Cards. It also announced plans to expand the exercise to all NIA District Offices nationwide in the coming weeks to ensure broader access and inclusivity.
“The Authority will also announce, in the coming weeks, the extension of this registration service to all NIA District Offices nationwide to expand access for applicants across the country,” the release stated.
The new registration initiative forms part of the government’s broader push to create a digital and inclusive national identity framework, enabling easier access to public services, education, healthcare, and financial systems for all citizens, regardless of age.
