NDC Delegation ‘Nearly Attacked’ at Ernest Kumi’s One-Week Observance

A high-powered delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, faced hostility during the one-week memorial service of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, at Akyem Wenchi in the Eastern Region.

According to NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, the team had visited the funeral grounds on Thursday, August 28, 2025, to sympathise with the bereaved family when parts of the crowd turned against them.

“While some mourners warmly received us, others began booing and attempted to physically attack the delegation,” Gbande told Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

The NDC delegation included the National Chairman, the National Organiser, the Deputy Communications Officer, and Regional Executives.

Gbande described the confrontation as a worrying signal of possible violence ahead of the Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.

He, however, acknowledged that Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo and some traditional leaders later approached the NDC team to apologise for the incident.

A video of the tense confrontation has since circulated on social media, drawing mixed reactions.

The memorial, themed “My Hero Lives On”, brought together family, friends, political figures, and community members to mourn the late lawmaker.

Mr Kumi, 40, died on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife and children.
