President John Dramani Mahama has appointed 25-year-old legal practitioner Naomi Borley Alabi as the acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Finance and Administration at the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), marking a significant milestone for youth leadership in the tourism sector.
The appointment, confirmed in a letter signed by Executive Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, positions Naomi to support the GTDC in mobilising investment and resources to boost sustainable tourism development across Ghana.
Born in May 1999, Naomi is the daughter of Professor Joshua Alabi, a respected academic and leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who also served as campaign manager to President Mahama.
Naomi Alabi brings an impressive academic and professional background to the role. She earned her LLB from the University of Portsmouth in 2021, followed by an LLM and Legal Practice Course (LPC) from the University of Law in the UK. She later completed her legal training at the Ghana School of Law, qualifying to practise in both Ghana and the United Kingdom. She is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK).
Her new role will see her working closely with Professor Kobby Mensah, the recently appointed CEO of GTDC, to enhance the company’s operational effectiveness and strengthen its investment portfolio. The GTDC is the investment wing of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, tasked with promoting and facilitating tourism-related investments, equity partnerships, and technical support to small businesses in the sector.
Naomi’s career includes stints as Chief Legal Consultant at Moorgate Lane Solicitors, Executive Secretary of the Consumer Advocacy Centre, Board Member of Best Assurance Company Ltd, and a lecturer at Accra Metropolitan University.
She has led several EU-backed projects, such as the DigiGrad Africa Project and the Next Level Skills for Student Leaders (NELS) under the Erasmus Programme, and also served as president of Amnesty International at the University of Portsmouth, where she championed human rights campaigns.
Her appointment is widely seen as part of President Mahama’s strategy to empower a new generation of professionals to play key roles in Ghana’s public service while boosting the tourism sector’s role in national development.
