The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has disclosed that the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, was on the verge of rejoining the NDC before her death on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Nana Konadu, wife of the party’s founder and former President Jerry John Rawlings, was a central figure in the NDC’s formative years and a strong advocate for women’s empowerment through the 31st December Women’s Movement.
After losing the NDC’s presidential primary in 2011, she broke away to form the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012, marking a historic split within the NDC’s ranks. Although disqualified from the 2012 presidential election, she later contested in 2016 as the NDP’s flagbearer.
Speaking after leading an NDC delegation to her residence on Monday, October 27, Fifi Kwetey revealed that reconciliation efforts between the party and Nana Konadu had reached an advanced stage.
“I wouldn’t say the talks were unsuccessful. I would rather say that the timing was the challenge. Because even on her part, you could clearly see that she was ready,” he said.
Mr Kwetey explained that the leadership of the NDC had long sought to heal past divisions and restore relations with the former First Lady, recognising her immense contribution to the party’s founding and growth.
“We have constantly said that with the role she played in forming this party and making it great and strong—despite the difficulties that came along the way—we needed to put those behind us. I am happy that during her time, these efforts started and she embraced them,” he noted.
He described Nana Konadu as a towering figure in Ghana’s political history, whose courage, leadership, and commitment to women’s empowerment left an indelible mark.
“She was a bold, visionary woman who stood for justice and empowerment. The party will miss her dearly,” he added.
