Mobile Money Limited is ramping up its efforts to combat mobile money fraud, with the company now blocking over 400,000 scam text messages every day, according to its Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, Godwin Tamakloe.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, May 2, Tamakloe explained that the company has deployed advanced digital filters capable of detecting and intercepting fraudulent SMS messages before they reach unsuspecting users.
“…We have a system that we have set some rules on that block that SMS that goes to the customers,” Tamakloe said. “The attack channels are an SMS, a link, or a call. So the system blocks the SMS because of certain words in the SMS. We can block over 400,000 SMS in a day.”
Mobile money fraud continues to be a growing concern in Ghana, with many victims frequently sharing their experiences on social media. Criminals often pose as agents, customer service personnel, or lottery officials, tricking users into disclosing sensitive information or authorising false transactions.
Addressing public suspicion that some cases may be linked to insiders within the mobile money network, Tamakloe firmly rejected the notion.
He assured customers that service staff are structurally barred from accessing personal information such as PINs and emphasised the company’s strict internal controls.
“There is no way a Mobile Money agent or employee has access to your PIN or transaction details unless you disclose them,” he stated.
Tamakloe also urged victims of fraud to be truthful and transparent in recounting how they were scammed. He noted that full and honest accounts are crucial for investigators to trace fraud networks and improve preventive measures.
