The minority in Parliament has rejected the nomination of Deputy Attorney General and Justice Minister-designate, Justice Srem-Sai, following a tense standoff with the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor.
The disagreement erupted when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin asked the nominee to demonstrate a traditional dance during his vetting.
Ahiafor, however, dismissed the request, sparking accusations of bias and unfair treatment from the minority caucus.
Frustrated by the chairman’s stance, Afenyo-Markin accused him of interrupting the minority’s questioning process and described his conduct as “whimsical.” The tension led to a brief suspension of proceedings, after which the minority announced their decision to reject Srem-Sai’s nomination.
In protest, the minority also rejected the nominations of Alhassan Suhuyini (deputy minister-designate for roads and highways), Sulemana Yussif (deputy minister-designate for lands and natural resources), and Yussif Issaka Jajah (deputy minister-designate for tourism, culture, and creative arts).
Afenyo-Markin justified the move, insisting that the chairman’s handling of the vetting process was unfair. He further stated that the approval of the nominees would now be the sole responsibility of the majority caucus.
