Minority in Parliament Rewards Black Queens with GH₵100,000

Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, have received a GH₵100,000 cash reward from the Minority Caucus in Parliament in recognition of their stellar performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they finished third.

The symbolic presentation was made on Tuesday, July 29, during a courtesy visit by the team and their technical staff to Parliament following their return from Morocco.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin personally handed over the money in physical cash, hailing the team’s resilience and determination that earned them a bronze medal—their best WAFCON finish in nearly a decade.

“You’ve made the country proud. Your journey was not just about football but about hope, courage, and what can be achieved through unity,” Afenyo-Markin said.
“This token is not just appreciation but motivation for the journey ahead.”

The Queens returned to the WAFCON stage for the first time since 2018, overcoming early setbacks to script an inspiring campaign. They opened with a loss to South Africa and a draw with Mali but rallied to win their final group game, sealing a spot in the quarterfinals.

In a tense knockout phase, Ghana edged Algeria in a penalty shootout, booking a semi-final clash with host nation Morocco. Despite a hard-fought match, the Queens were narrowly defeated, denying them a shot at the title.

However, they bounced back with grit and composure in the third-place playoff, beating South Africa 4-3 on penalties to secure the bronze.

The team has since embarked on a celebratory tour, which included a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, and continues to receive accolades from across the political and sporting spectrum.

Midfielder Grace Asantewaa and captain Portia Boakye were also named in the 2024 CAF Women’s AFCON Team of the Tournament, underscoring their pivotal roles in Ghana’s success.
