“Mahama Should’ve Waited a Year Before Removing Dampare” – Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim

Former chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim

The former chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim, has stated that President John Dramani Mahama should have delayed the removal of Dr George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police (IGP) by at least a year.

Dr Dampare was relieved of his position as part of security sector reforms under the Mahama administration. Having served as IGP since 2021, he was widely credited with implementing key policing reforms, including enhancing community engagement and strengthening internal discipline within the Ghana Police Service.

He has been replaced by COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Speaking on Hot Morning Drive as a panellist Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim acknowledged that the replacement was expected but criticised the timing of the decision.

“Even though I am not surprised that the president replaced the former IGP, I feel he should’ve waited for a year before removing him,” she stated.

Her remarks have fueled ongoing discussions about the rationale behind Dampare’s removal and the broader implications of the security sector shake-up under the Mahama administration.
