President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to launch a full and transparent investigation into the tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including top government officials and members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
In a solemn national address from Jubilee House on Thursday, August 7, the President expressed deep sorrow and pledged solidarity with the families of the deceased, calling for unity as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the fatal crash in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region.
“It is with a profoundly heavy heart that I address you tonight,” President Mahama said. “Yesterday, a tragic helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight cherished members of our Ghanaian family.”
Among those who perished were Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, NADMO Deputy DG Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Air Force personnel—Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Tsum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo.
Describing the incident as a personal loss, the President paid glowing tribute to the victims, hailing their patriotism, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to Ghana’s development.
President Mahama confirmed that a Board of Inquiry had been established by the Ghana Armed Forces and assured the public of an impartial and comprehensive probe. He noted that both the flight data and cockpit voice recorders had been recovered and would play a crucial role in uncovering the cause of the crash.
“All eight bodies have been retrieved, and we are working closely with families to ensure dignified identification and burial arrangements,” he said.
To honour the memory of the departed, President Mahama declared a three-day national mourning period from Thursday, August 7, during which all citizens are encouraged to light candles and lay flowers. A national memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, August 9, at the State House Forecourt, with books of condolence to be opened at key locations from Sunday, August 10, to Thursday, August 14.
An interdenominational state funeral will be held on Friday, August 15, at Black Star Square.
In a passionate call for national unity, Mahama urged Ghanaians to refrain from speculation and politicisation, emphasising that the moment called for compassion and collective mourning.
“In this moment of grief, let us be united not by partisanship, but by our shared humanity and sorrow,” he said. “Let our words bring comfort, our hearts show kindness, and our unity become the legacy we offer to those we have lost.”
He concluded by offering prayers for the departed and strength for the grieving.
“Though they are gone from our sight, they remain forever in the spirit of the nation they so faithfully served. May God bless their souls and bless our nation,” the President said.
