President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.
The confirmation was made on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, by the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who announced that the President has written to the Council of State for advice on the nomination in line with constitutional requirements.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, currently the most senior judge on the Supreme Court, has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 2025 following the suspension and subsequent removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for stated misbehaviour.
In a press release, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said:
“The President, after careful consideration and in keeping with Article 144 of the 1992 Constitution, has nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to assume the high office of Chief Justice. His nomination reflects the President’s confidence in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s integrity, competence, and long-standing service to the Judiciary.”
Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was appointed to the Supreme Court in June 2008 by former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Born on December 26, 1956, he had his early education at Goaso and later at Konongo Odumase Secondary School before studying law at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, where he was called to the Bar in 1983.
He has held various judicial positions over his four-decade career, including:
- Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi
- High Court Judge at Duayaw Nkwanta
- Court of Appeal Judge
- Justice of the Supreme Court since 2008
The Council of State is expected to provide its advice to the President in the coming days, after which the nomination will be forwarded to Parliament for vetting and approval.
