President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive to the Ministers for Interior, Transport, and Foreign Affairs to urgently collaborate and fast-track the implementation of Ghana’s long-anticipated e-visa system.
The directive was delivered during the commissioning of two major travel infrastructure upgrades—the Air Navigation Services (ANS) and the Multi-Agency Command Centre—on Monday, August 4. These facilities include integrated Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems, which are expected to significantly enhance border and passenger data management.
President Mahama emphasised that these systems will not only strengthen national security but also serve as a foundation for digitising immigration processes, including visa applications.
“I’m directing the Hon. Ministers for Interior, Transport, and Foreign Affairs to collaborate to ensure that this platform is expanded to enable us to implement this long-awaited e-service for the country,” President Mahama said.
He also tasked the ministries to extend the platform’s capabilities to Ghana’s sea and land border posts and integrate it with existing e-gate systems. The president further charged the team to explore using the same system to enhance cargo information management for customs operations.
According to the president, the introduction of an e-visa system will streamline the application process for foreign nationals, reduce bureaucracy, support tourism growth, and position Ghana as a competitive business and travel destination on the continent.
“The future of travel is digital, and Ghana must not be left behind,” President Mahama stated.
The e-visa initiative has long been a key policy goal for improving Ghana’s travel and investment environment. With this latest push from the presidency and the commissioning of enabling infrastructure, implementation is expected to accelerate in the coming months.
