President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and fuel allocations for political appointees.
The directive forms part of government’s broader efforts to reduce public expenditure and prioritize critical areas of national development.
“President John Dramani Mahama has, effective immediately, directed the cancellation of payment of fuel allowances and allocation of fuel to all political appointees,” the statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, read.
The release explained that the decision is rooted in the President’s belief that political leadership must not be exempt from the sacrifices being demanded of citizens. It emphasized the need for those in government to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and solidarity with the Ghanaian people.
“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the release stated.
The cost-cutting directive comes alongside other fiscal reforms already underway, including a reduction in the number of ministers and staff at the Presidential Office. Government says these changes reflect a commitment to leaner administration and prudent financial management.
The statement further noted that additional austerity measures have been implemented, including the discontinuation of satellite television subscriptions at the Presidency and other government offices.
“Other measures have included stopping satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other government facilities,” the release added.
