The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has issued a strong directive for the immediate eviction of all unauthorised occupants on public school lands across the metropolis.
The move follows a city-wide inspection tour of basic schools in areas including Subin, Bantama, Manhyia South, and Manhyia North, where the mayor discovered widespread encroachment. Activities such as makeshift shelters, illegal trading, auto mechanic operations, suspected drug peddling, and unapproved religious gatherings were all taking place on school properties—posing a significant threat to safety, sanitation, and the overall academic environment.
“We are not going to allow anyone to stay on school land in Kumasi; it’s adversely affecting education,” Mr. Boadi stated during his visit to schools such as the Asem, Amankwatia, and State Boys/Girls clusters.
The mayor has tasked the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Physical Planning Department, and the Works Department to act swiftly to reclaim all affected lands. Their mandate includes demolishing unauthorised structures and restoring secure and clean environments that support effective teaching and learning.
Local education authorities and teachers have welcomed the directive, citing years of frustration over noise pollution, security concerns, and deteriorating infrastructure due to unchecked encroachment.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly says it will intensify enforcement measures and put in place permanent barriers to prevent future invasions of public school lands.
This initiative forms part of the city’s broader efforts to revamp basic education infrastructure and improve learning outcomes across the Ashanti Regional capital.
