The Krachi East Municipal Assembly has stepped up efforts to strengthen community participation in local governance through a strategic engagement with traditional leaders, aimed at deepening collaboration and addressing development challenges across the municipality.
The initiative, led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Sarfo Nketia, brought together chiefs and key stakeholders at a community engagement meeting on Thursday, October 2. The discussions focused on leveraging the traditional authority of chiefs to accelerate progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, and security.
During the meeting, Hon. Nketia outlined various government interventions being implemented in the municipality:
- Education: Expanding access to quality education and improving school infrastructure.
- Health: Enhancing healthcare delivery and improving access to medical services.
- Agriculture: Providing support to farmers and promoting agricultural productivity.
- Security: Strengthening security measures and clarifying the role of chiefs in maintaining peace and order.
The chiefs commended the Assembly’s initiative but raised concerns over pressing local challenges, including:
- Poor road networks, which hamper transportation and economic activities.
- Weak collaboration between security agencies and traditional authorities.
- Inadequate school facilities, many of which are in dilapidated conditions.
- Insufficient healthcare infrastructure, including the lack of modern health centres.
- Limited support for farmers, affecting agricultural development and livelihoods.
In response, Hon. Nketia acknowledged the concerns and assured stakeholders that road improvement works would be carried out in phases to tackle the municipality’s transportation challenges.
He also pledged to intensify community engagement efforts to foster a sense of ownership among residents, ensuring that development projects are both relevant and sustainable.
“Sustainable development can only be achieved through unity and cooperation. Chiefs must take advantage of this opportunity to be part of the decision-making process. Empowering traditional authorities is crucial for sustainable growth and poverty reduction,” Hon. Nketia emphasised.
The meeting ended with a renewed call for community ownership of development initiatives, underscoring the vital role of chiefs and residents in driving progress.
The Krachi East Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the municipality’s developmental challenges and enhancing the quality of life for all residents through collaborative governance and inclusive planning.
