Firebrand politician and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has officially announced his bid for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries, signalling his intent to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
In a statement released Monday, July 29, Agyapong declared, “Now that nominations have been opened, I will be contesting for the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 Presidential Primaries,” confirming widespread speculation about his political ambitions following the 2024 elections.
Agyapong, who is known for his outspoken and independent political style, said his decision was driven not by personal ambition but by a deep desire to serve the Ghanaian people.
“This is not about me. It is about all of us,” he stated, pledging to foster a nation where every citizen has “a fair shot at success” and to lead with “integrity and purpose.”
The businessman-turned-politician expressed gratitude to party supporters, professionals, youth groups, and even sitting MPs, many of whom he revealed have volunteered to personally cover his nomination fees—a gesture he described as “humbling and inspiring.”
In a personal touch, Agyapong also used the occasion to celebrate his long-time aide and Kencity Group’s General Manager, Lawyer Kwaku Amoh‑Darteh, who shares a birthday with the date of the announcement.
“I take this opportunity to wish him a very happy birthday and thank him and every member of the team for the incredible work you continue to do,” Agyapong noted.
With this declaration, Kennedy Agyapong becomes the second high-profile NPP figure to announce a bid for the 2026 primaries, following the earlier declaration by former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.
