Former Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee against Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue, has openly declared his support for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, hailing him as the kind of empathetic and results-driven leader Ghana needs for meaningful transformation.
Speaking in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, September 11, Bissue said the Assin Central legislator’s entrepreneurial background and strong connection with the grassroots uniquely position him to address Ghana’s pressing economic challenges.
According to him, Agyapong represents a refreshing departure from the over-reliance on international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which, in his view, have defined Ghana’s economic path for far too long.
“I have confidence in Kennedy Agyapong because for him, empathy and compassion matter. Hitherto, we looked at politics from the point where we came up with a lot of theories, and then in the end we said IMF or World Bank. I think that we should have factored all those in ourselves,” Bissue argued.
Bissue expressed deep frustration over Ghana’s persistent dependence on imports despite being endowed with vast natural resources. He called for a deliberate shift toward value addition and industrialisation, stressing that a leader with a business mindset like Agyapong’s could drive such a vision.
“I believe that Ghana, with the natural resources that we have, should be an exporting country of finished goods. But we are actually importing a lot. Having an entrepreneur as our leader will transform Ghana,” he emphasised.
The former presidential staffer also highlighted Kennedy Agyapong’s strong ties with ordinary Ghanaians, noting that his ability to resonate with public sentiment makes him a formidable candidate in the NPP’s flagbearership contest.
“Looking at the qualities of Kennedy, most Ghanaians are saying that ‘if you bring Kennedy, we will vote for him,’” Bissue added.
Agyapong, a seasoned businessman and long-serving MP, has built his campaign around job creation, industrialisation, and anti-corruption. His grassroots appeal has endeared him to sections of the electorate who view him as a pragmatic alternative to establishment politicians.
