JoyNews Condemns Attack On Reporter Latif Iddrisu By Alleged NPP Supporters

JoyNews has issued a strong condemnation following a violent assault on its journalist, Latif Iddrisu, who was attacked while covering the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The incident occurred on the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where Mr Iddrisu was delivering a live report. According to eyewitnesses and JoyNews’ own accounts, the journalist was struck on the head by individuals believed to be supporters of Chairman Wontumi, who had gathered at the scene in solidarity.

Some of the attackers reportedly used a stone and a rubber band as weapons during the assault, resulting in physical harm to the reporter. The station has since filed an official report with the police and is calling for swift and decisive action.

“This violent act against a journalist carrying out his lawful duty is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” the station said in a statement. “Journalists serve the public interest by reporting events as they unfold. Any attempt to obstruct, intimidate, or harm them is not only an attack on press freedom but also a threat to our democracy.”

JoyNews acknowledged the apology rendered by the NPP but emphasised the importance of accountability. “We urge the party to fully cooperate with the police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the statement added.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from media rights groups and civil society organisations, who have reiterated calls for enhanced protections for journalists in Ghana.

JoyNews reaffirmed its commitment to fearless, fair, and accurate reporting and vowed that such acts of intimidation will not silence its journalists.
